| Location Lat 33° 32' 6N Long 112° 22' 59W Luke Field is located at an elevation of 1,085' above sea level west of Glendale and Phoenix in Arizona in the United States. Still in use today as Luke Air Force Base (Luke AFB). Construction During 1940, the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) to choose a location for an airfield for advanced flight training in Arizona. On March 24, 1941, the City of Phoenix leased the land to the government for a dollar a year for a military airfield. On March 29, 1941 Del. E. Webb Construction Company bgan construction of what was to be named Litchfield Park Airfield. Named Luke Field in honor of 2nd Lt. Frank Luke who earned the Meda of Honor and was the U.S. second highest ace in World War I and after the name was released from Luke Field in Hawaii. Wartime History On June 6, 1941 the first advanced flight training class 41-F arrived at Luke Field flying the AT-6 Texan. As the base only had a few buildings, they began flying at Sky Harbor Airport (Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport) until the airfield and facilities were completed. On August 15, 1941 the first class graduated. During World War II, Luke Field became one of the main advance training bases for the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). One of the early instructors was Captain Barry M. Goldwater, future U.S. Senator for Arizona and U.S. Presidentail candidate in 1964. One of the many pilots who trained at Luke Field was 2nd Lt. Richard I. Bong who attended Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School (Clas 41-K) at Luke Field from November 4, 1941 until December 31, 1941. Today Still in use today as Luke Air Force Base (Luke AFB).
