Location McChord Field is located nine miles south-southwest of Tacoma in Washington State in the United States. Located adjacent to Lakewood, Washington and Parkland, Washington. Construction Built by the U.S. Army and initially known as Army Airfield of Fort Lewis or Fort Lewis Airfield. Also known as McChord Field. Named in honor of Colonel William Caldwell McChord, former Chief of the Training and Operations Division in Headquarters , U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC). In 1939, Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower earned his private pilot license at Fort Lewis Airfield. Wartime History During World War II, McChord Field was a delivery point for newly built B-17 Flying Fortress bombers being flown from Boeing Field to delivery to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) at this location.
