Location Morotai Cemetery was located near Pitu Airfield (Pitoe) on Morotai Island. Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in North Maluku Province in Indonesia. Wartime History Following the September 15, 1944 U.S. Army amphibious landing on Morotai Island, the U.S. Army established a cemetery at this location known as Morotai Cemetery. Afterwards, Allied war dead were buried at this location until late 1945 as remains were recovered from Japanese occupied areas. Postwar On October 25, 1945 buried was F/Sgt Edmond M. Stevenson pilot Spitfire A58-419 ditched January 13, 1945 who became a Prisoner Of War (POW) and died April 14, 1945. Also, Flt Lt. Benjamin B. Newman pilot Spitfire A58-654 KIA August 2, 1945, the last casualty of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) No. 79 Squadron during World War II. During late 1945, the graves were disinterred and transported to other cemeteries including Manila American Cemetery and the United States for Americans and Ambon War Cemetery for Australians.
