WEDNESDAY, 7 OCTOBER 1914
(IJN) October 7, 1914, a Japanese Navy expeditionary squadron landed on Yap in a bloodless takeover from the German administration. Afterwards, a secret treaty agreement was made between Japan and Britain guaranteeing Japanese control over all Pacific islands north of the Equator. In 1919, this arrangement was written into the Treaty of Versailles.

WEDNESDAY, 14 OCTOBER 1914
On October 14, 1914 the first vessel to tranist the new Panama Canal from west to east was USS Jupiter AC-3. Immediately, the Panama Canal became an important logistical asset during World War I.
