During November, 1914, MV Buka was prepared for scuttling by greasing and painting her engines he took her to the neighboring Kobuan Bay near Kieta and with the assistance of his police master and several trusted natives opened the cocks and sank her close to the shore in fifteen fathoms, and marked the location with a bouy.
In November 1914 Nauru was seized
by Australian troops under the command of Captain Norrie who became acting military administrator for Nauru and the island remained under British control until 1921 when a League of Nations mandate granted administrative rights to the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand plus the establishment of the
British Phosphate Commissioners (BPC) to mine phosphates from the island.
