SUNDAY, 5 JULY 1942

ALASKA (11th AF): A B-17 flies a weather mission.

SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA (SWPA, 5th AF): B-17s and B-26s from 22nd BG bomb Lae and Salamaua. Headquarters Squadron (HQ Squadron), 22nd Bombardment Group (Medium) moves from Townsville to Woodstock. Force landed is B-17E 41-2417 roughly 15 miles northeast of the Mitchell River Mission on Cape York.

Submarine USS Growler (SS-215) sinks Japanese destroyer Arare and damages destroyers Kasumi and Shiranui off Kiska at Lat 52°00'N, 177°40'E. Growler is damaged by depth charges.

Submarine USS Sturgeon (SS-187) damages Japanese oiler San Pedro Maru south of Palauig, Luzon, 16°07'N, 119°13'E.
