Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ)
I want information about salvaging wrecks
listing of frequently asked questions about the PacificWrecks.com.
Salvaging wrecks is an expensive
and tricky matter in any location. Many wrecks have been "stolen"
from local villages by museums or individuals, prompting laws
to protect them. These wrecks are then seized and sit in a customs
container. It is the opinion of this website, that remaining wrecks
remain in their current locations. The best wrecks in each region
have already been salvaged. Why not leave the last remaining wrecks
to rest in peace as monumnets in the counties where they were
lost.
Removing US Navy wrecks have additional
pitfalls. The US Navy has a policy of "once owned by the
Navy, always owned by the Navy" and claims ownership of all
wrecks known and unknown. This law has been fought on several
occasions but was created to discourage salvage by individuals
without the proper training to restore a wreck.
Also, wrecks that reside inside protected
areas or National Parks are similarly protected. Many other countries
have their own laws and regulations to protect wrecks and prevent
their removal.
