Background
Manufactured by Sir W. G. Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd in the United Kingdom. These guns were also manufactured by Armstrong Whitworth's subsidiary companies including: Stabilimento Armstrong–Pozzuoli, Vickers, Sons & Maxims, and Nihon Seiko Shi (Japanese Steelworks) at Muroran, Japan.
In British service, designated as the 6-inch BL Mk XVII. By the start of World War II, this gun was considered obsolete as a Naval Gun. Remaining guns were emplaced in shore batteries to defend strategic positions.
