IJA Peter Flahavin 1996 |
Gun History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) as 75mm Anti-Aircraft Gun (Type 88) serial number unknown. Wartime History During early July 1942 this gun was transported to Guadalcanal and emplaced as part of a battery near Lunga Point Airfield to provide anti-aircraft defense for the area. On August 7, 1942 captured by the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) after their landing at Red Beach on Guadalcanal. Wreckage Until the late 1990s, this gun remained partially submerged in the sand on Red Beach on Guadalcanal. The barrel was in a horizontal position with the breech removed. The gun is completed rusted from exposure to the salt water. Nearby is 75mm anti-aircraft gun Type 88 (No. 1). Peter Flahavin noted in 1996: "We were told these guns were three of a four gun battery defending Lunga Point Airfield (Henderson Field) that was captured by the Marines. People remember seeing a fourth gun but nobody seems to know what has become of it today." The fate of this gun is unknown. It is possible these two guns are missing or scrapped since the late 1990s.
