Wartime History Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Army (IJN) as 75mm anti-aircraft gun Type 88 (1928) serial number unknown. This gun was transported to New Guinea and emplaced at Madang to provide anti-aircraft defense or anti-ship defense against targets in Astrolabe Bay. Wreckage This gun is mounted in a concrete square block off Coronation Drive in Madang on a strech of coast dubbed "Machine Gun Beach" overlooking Astrolabe Bay to the east. Lori Witham adds: "There was a violent storm around 2000, and the coral wall broke apart so that the concrete slab is now crooked and looking like it's going to fall into the ocean, but the gun is still firmly on top of the slab. The constant salt spray has rusted the gun." Contribute
