Background
Built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation as model S-58. Developed from the smaller Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw (S-55). On March 8, 1954 the first prototype flew. By September 1954 the first production versions entered service in the U.S. Navy (USN) as HSS-1 Seabat in anti-submarine configuration and HUS-1 Seahorse in utility configuration. The British produced the license built Westland Wessex. Also produced under license by Sud Aviation in France.
