Wartime History During the Pacific War, Anchorage was an important base area supporting U.S. forces in Alaska and the Aleutians Campaing and Lend-Lease deliveries to Russia. Fort Richardson U.S. Army base located near Anchorage, today part of Joint Base Richardson-Elmendorf. Included Fort Richardson Post Cemetery where American personnel were buried during the Pacific War. Elmendorf Field (Elmendorf AFB) Prewar airfield used during World War II.
