Location Lat 15° 28' 0S Long 145° 15' 0E Cooktown is located on the Cape York Peninsula in northern Queensland in Australia. Offshore is Low Wooded Island. Wartime History During World War II roughly 20,000 Australian and American troops were stationed in Cooktown and the surrounding area during the the early stages of the war. Most of the population of Cape York Peninsula, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, were relocated southward for the duration of the war.
