Location Lat 32° 55' 0S Long 151° 45' 0E Newcastle is located at an elevation of 3' / 1m above sea level on the coast of New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. To the north is Williamtown and to the south is Sydney. Wartime History On June 8, 1942 at 2:15am Japanese submarine I-24 opens fire at the shipyard in Newcastle. Thirteen minutes later the shore battery at Fort Scratchley returned fire, firing four shells that missed. Undeterred, the submarine continued shelling for three more minutes. In total, 26 HE and 8 star shells were fired using a new type of flashless powder. Ashore, they caused minimal damage and no casualties.
