Location Lat 19° 1′ 58.8″ S, 146° 36′ 36″ E Rattlesnake Island is a small island located in Queensland in Australia. To the southeast is Townsville. Located to the east is Herald Island and to the southeast is Magentic Island and to the north is Palm Island. Wartime History During World War II, used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) as a gunnery and bombing range. During 1945 aircraft wreckage was transported to the island for use as targets. Today Today, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aircraft from RAAF Townsville continue to use the island as a gunnery and bombing range. Also for use as a training area for pilot and air crew survival courses. P-40N Kittyhawk A29-446 Code HU-S During May 1945 transported to Rattlesnake Island for use as a target until salvaged P-40N Kittyhawk A29-462 Pilot Nielsen ditched July 2, 1945 pilot unhurt converted to components and abandoned until salvaged Contribute
