Location
Wellesley Islands are three main islands that comprise the group: Mornington Island
(the largest), Bentinck Island, Sweers Island and Bountiful Island. Located about 60 miles
off the coast of Queensland in Australia.
Bountiful Island
Island in the Wellesley Island Group.
Mornington Island
Largest Island in the Wellesley Island Group. Located roughly 450 miles south of Horn Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. An aboriginal mission administered by Mr. and Mrs. J. B. McCarthy during the war years.
Wartime History
During the war, the Australian Army established a radar station and airfield on the island.
