U.S. Marines from 1st Parachute Battalion take cover on the narrow beach at Koiari on Bougainville
Since dawn, the Marines were under fire by the Japanese defenders. The Marines are wearing camouflage uniforms and helmet covers. At the center is a Marine laying on his back holding his M1911 pistol upward. The Marine in the center foreground is armed with a M1A1 Thompson sub machine gun with the barrel pointed upward.
