Location Lat 5° 31' 39" S Long 154° 39' 31"E Taiof Island is located of the northwestern corner of Bougainville Island. Also known as Toiokh Island. To the north is Sohano Island and Buka Island. To the southeast is Soraken and Soraken Harbor. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of Kieta District in the Territory of New Guinea and considered part of the North Solomons, Northern Solomons. During 1975 became Bougainville Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). On June 25, 2002 became the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB). Today located in Kunua Rural LLG of Northern Bougainville District. Wartime History During 1942 occupied by the Japanese. In early March 1944, Japanese troops attempted to withdraw from Taiof Island using native canoes and attempted to reach Tarlean on the northwest coast of Bougainville but were ambushed by villagers loyal to Australia New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU).
