Location
Hare Island is located in the southeast of Kapingamarangi Atoll (Greenwich). The island is one mile long and 300 yards wide. Most of the native population lives on this island. Today, part of Pohnpei State in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Prewar
In 1935, the native population was 399 living on Hare Island. Prewar, the Japanese built a small radio tower on Hare Island.
World War II History
During the Pacific War, the Japanese built a barracks and two temporary 100' piers on Hare Island and moored seaplanes. Offshore was Kapingamarangi Seaplane Base (Greenwich) used as a seaplane operating area.
