Location Satawan Island is located in Satawan Atoll in the Mortlock Island Group (Nomoi Islands) in Chuuk State (Truk) in the Federated States of Micronesia. Located roughly 180 miles southeast of Truk Lagoon. In 1991 following the Independence of the Federated States of Micronesia spelled "Satowan". Wartime History During World War II, Satawan Island was considered part of the Nomoi Island Group (Nomoi Islands) in the Caroline Islands. Starting in March 1944, attacked by U.S. Navy (USN) aircraft and U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) B-24 Liberators and was also subjected to a shore bombardment by a cruiser from Task Group 58.1 (TG 58.1).
