Location Tern Island is the largest island at the northern end of the French Frigate Shoals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (Leeward Islands) of Hawaii in the United States. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Wartime History Occupied by the US Navy during World War II. Postwar The Coast Guard operated from Tern Island for years. Today The island is occupied by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service only. Tern Island Airfield Island enlarged during the war for a single runway.
