Location Sumba Island is located in the Lesser Sunda Islands (Lesser Sundas). Also known as Soemba Island. Also spelled Samba Island. In Indonesian known as Pulau Sumba. To the north is East Nusa Tenggara. Borders the Savu Sea (Sawu Sea) to the east and Timor Sea to the south. Prewar and during the Pacific War, part of the Netherlands East Indies (NEI). Today located in East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur) in Indonesia. Wartime History During early 1942, occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the Pacific War. Starting in early December 1943 attacked by Allied bombers until the end of the Pacific War.
