Location
Tsushima Strait is the southern portion of the Korea Strait bordering the northern coast of southwestern Japan. In Japanese, known as 対馬海峡 / Tsushima Kaikyō meaning "Eastern Channel". In Korean known as 동수로 Dongsuro. Borders the Korea Strait to the north and beyond Korea. To the south borders Japan including Tsushima Island to the southeast, Honshu to the east, Kyushu to the south and Gotō Islands to the southeast. The narrowest point is southeast of Shimono-shima on southern Tsushima Island.
Wartime History
Prewar and during the Pacific War, Tsushima Strait was an important for Japanese commercial shipping and warships.
On May 19, 1945 in the
western Tsushima Strait, while underway Daishin Maru accidentally collides with light cruiser Kashima that results in an explosion that damages Kashima's port bow and causes a fire and sinks the cargo ship.
