Visible is the width of Tarawa Island (Betio). At the center is the southern coast of the island Black Beach No. 1 (Black No. 1) with a pair of dual 5" guns emplaced in revetments. At the upper edge of the northern coast of the island with Red Beach 1 (Red No. 1) bordering Tarawa Lagoon. At the center right is the western edge of Tarawa Airfield with several "U" shaped revetments visible. At the lower right is the edge of the left dive flap of the SBD Dauntless dive bomber from USS Essex (CV-9) that the photographer is aboard.
