Aftermath of the U.S. Marine landing on Red Beach 2 (Red No. 2) on the north coast of Tarawa (Betio)
Visible in the foreground is the seawall made of coconut logs and several disabled Amphibious Vehicle, Tracked (LVT) Alligator landing craft from the invasion on November 20, 1943. The curved inlet beyond was designated Red Beach 1 (Red No. 1) during the invasion. Ashore are palm trees damaged by the bombardment. Also visible are dead bodies and debris from the battle with U.S. Marines ashore.
