Location
Prewar and during World War II, present day Pakistan was part of India. On August 14, 1947 Pakistan became independent as a dominion of the British Commonwealth. In 1956, became an independent nation officially known as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan that was spit into West Pakistan and East Pakistan. In 1971, East Pakistan became Bangladesh. Today, borders India to the east, Afghanistan to the west and north, Iran to the southwest and China to the northeast.
