Pair of Japanese barges abandoned on Scarlet Beach on the north coast of eastern New Guinea
On October 17, 1943 in the predawn hours, three Japanese barges loaded with soldiers attempted to land on Scarlet Beach. Detected, the Japanese were fired on and all three barges were and 37 Japanese killed on the beach.
