Location
Put Put village is located on the eastern coast of New Britain. Borders Rugen Harbor (also known as Put Put Harbor). To the south is Induna Island. A prewar coconut plantation planted with coconut palms harvesting copra existed at this location. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of the New Britain District in the Territory of New Guinea. Today located in East
New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG).
Wartime History
During 1942, occupied by the Japanese, who emplaced a gun on on the ridge and maintained a small garrison in the area.
Gordon Manuel writes in 70,000 to One:
"[During late May 1943] They [the Japanese] were always looking for native canoes for fishing or for trips across Put Put Bay. The Japs stationed at Put Put often came over to our side of the bay in a motor boat."
