| Location Rabi village is located eastern New Guinea bordering Milne Bay along the main road (Route 5) between Turnbull Airfield (No. 3 Strip) to the east and Koebule Mission (KB Mission) to the west. During the Pacific War, the Japanese refereed to the entire Milne Bay area as "Rabi". Prewar and during the Pacific War located in the Eastern District of the Territory of Papua. Today located in Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Wartime History On August 31, 1942 in the early morning darkness, the Japanese advanced to Rabi during their attack against Turnbull Airfield (No. 3 Strip). After their failed assault, they encountered the Australian Army 2/12 Battalion with Commandos at Rabi along the Gama River. During the action, two Japanese light tanks Type 95 Ha Go Hull Number 1614 and Type 95 Ha Go became bogged along the road and were both abandoned. After the battle, both tanks were captured by the Australians and later salvaged to Australia. After the Battle of Milne Bay, the Rabi area was developed into an Allied camp area with Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) personnel camped in the vicinity. Between 1942 to 1943 the Rabi area was targeted by Japanese air raids.
