Wartime History
During late September 1942, the Japanese planned to land a group of 290 Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) soldiers and sixty 5th
Sasebo Special Naval Landing Force (5th Sasebo SNLF) persoonel at Taupota. Once ashore, they planned to walk southward across the east cape to Milne Bay. Instead, their landing barges were attacked by RAAF No. 75 Squadron P-40 Kittyhawks and the force was stranded on Goodenough Island.
