Location Kataoka is located on the southwest of Shumshu Island in the Kurile Islands (Kuril). Borders Kataoka Harbor. To the west is Paramushir Strait and Kataoka Harbor. To the northeast is Bettobi. Prewar and during World War II, Kataoka was part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. Wartime History The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) developed the Kataoka area into Kataoka Naval Base, the headquarters of the 5th Fleet. The base commanded twenty coastal defenses in the area and included Kataoka Fortress and Kataoka Airfield. During early June 1942, Kataoka Harbor was used as staging area for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) invasion force bound for the Aleutian Islands. Starting August 1943 attacked by American bombers from the Aleutian Islands until August 1945. American missions against Kataoka August 11, 1943–August 12, 1945 During August 1945, occupied by the Soviet Army and renamed Bajkovo or Байково. area for the Japanese invasion force bound for the Aleutians. Kataoka Airfield (No. 1 Shumshu, Imaizaki Airfield) Japanese airfield, seaplane base and Headquarters 5th Fleet Kataoka Fortress Nine fortified installations and twenty coastal defenses positions commanded from Kataoka Fortress. Japanese Army forces based here included. 3th Infantry Brigade (Major General Iwao Zugino), 282nd Battalion, 283rd Battalion, 284th Battalion, 285th Battalion, 286th Battalion, 287th Battalion, 91th Division, 1st & 2nd Artillery Unit. Supporting was the 11th Tank Regiment commanded by Col Zueo Ikeda equipped with 20 x Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha tanks, 19 Type 97 Chi-Ha tanks and 25 Type 95 Ha-Go Light tanks.
