Location
Kharimkotan Island
is located in the center of the Kurile Islands. Also known as Harumukotan or Karinkotan. Prewar and during World War II, part of Japan. Postwar, part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.
Wartime History
During the Pacfiic War, occupied by the Japanese. Starting in the middle of August 1944 until early April 1945 bombed by U.S. aircraft.
