    Cape Minami Shumshu | Sakhalin Oblast Russia
Location
Cape Minami is located at the southern coast of Shumshu Island in the Kurile Islands (Kuril, Chishima-Rettō). Also known as Minami Cape. In Japanese known as Minami-saki or Minami zaki. To the north is the Naka River and to the northeast is the mouth of the Naka River. Prewar and during the Pacific War part of Japan. Between September 1945 to December 1991 part of the Soviet Union (USSR). Today located in Sakhalin Oblast in Russia.

Prewar
A fish cannery was established near Cape Minami to the south of the Naka River.

Wartime History
During the Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) established a radar site at Kagenoma near Cape Minami. During 1944-1945 this radar site was the primary early warning system to detect incoming U.S. aircraft approaching from the Aleutian Islands. Between early April 1945 until early July 1945 attacked by American bombers that bombed and strafed this radar site.
