| Location South Africa is located at the southernmost country in Africa. On May 31, 1910 The Union of South Africa was established with four provinces as a self-governing Dominion of the British Commonwealth. On May 31, 1961 became the Republic of South Africa (RSA) with nine provinces. Wartime History On September 3, 1939 when World War II began in Europe. the ruling United Party split with Prime Minister J.B.M. Hertzog wanting South Africa to remain neutral. Parliament member Jan Smuts opted for joining the British war effort and after a narrow majority vote he became prime minister and South Africa declared war on Germany. South Africa became an important location for Allied shipping from Britain to the Suez or Indian Ocean. During World War II, German U-Boats and Japanese submarines patrolled off South Africa. Anti-submarine patrols were flown from South African airfields to protect convoys. Eastern Cape Province (Oos-Kaap) Located at the southeast of South Africa. Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) Located in Eastern Cape Province on the southern coast of South Africa. Port St. Johns Located in Eastern Cape Province on the southeast coast of South Africa. Western Cape Province (Wes-Kaap) Located at the southeast of South Africa Cape Town Located in Western Cape Province at the southwest tip of South Africa. Cape of Good Hope Located in Western Cape Province at the southwest tip of South Africa. KwaZulu-Natal Province (KZN) Durban Located in KwaZulu-Natal Province on the eastern coast of South Africa.
