Location Lat 8° 21' 42S Long 126° 54' 5E Lautem is located at an elevation of 55' / 16m on the northeast coast of Timor Island. To the north is the Wetar Strait and to the east is Cape Chater. Also known as Lautem Town, Vila Nova Malaca, Lautaim, Lautain, Lauten, Vila Nova de Malaca or Nova-Malaca. Wartime History Occupied by the Japanese during early 1942. Bombed by Allied aircraft during 1943-1944. As the war situation worsened for the Japanese, they emplaced sharpened bamboo poles pointed upward to serve as crude anti-paratrooper defense In the flat grass plains around Lautem. During the war, the Japanese maintained a large dump area for fuel, equipment and stores in the Lautem area. After their official surrender on September 11, 1945, they destroyed most material before the arrival of Allied occupation forces.
