Location Lat 8° 34' 4S Long 125° 35' 31E Taibesi is located at an elevation of 830' / 252m on the on the northern coast of Timor Island. To the west is Dili. Prewar and during World War II part of Portuguese Timor. Today located in the Dili Municipality of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (East Timor). Wartime History During the night of February 20, 1942 the Japanese landed near Dili. Occupied by the Japanese for the duration of the war until September 1945. In accordance with the terms of surrender, over five hundred vehicles, motorcycles, light tanks and guns were assembled in a park at Taibesi east of Dili. According to the Japanese, a "grass fire" destroyed most of the equipment. Likely the fire was deliberately started by the Japanese to avoid surrendering the material. Contribute
