| Location Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) borders the Red River in southern Vietnam. During the French colonial rule and during the Pacific War known as Saigon (Sài Gòn) in French Indochina. Postwar, Saigon was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam. In 1976 renamed Ho Chi Minh City and is a municipality in Vietnam. Wartime History During 1941, Saigon was occupied by the Japanese as part of an agreement allowing them to occupy French Indochina. Starting in January 1945 Saigon was attacked by U.S. Navy (USN) carrier aircraft and U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) bombers until the end of the Pacific War. Occupied by the Japanese until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. American missions against Saigon January 12, 1945–June 12, 1945 Postwar On September 2, 1945 Hanoi became the capital of Vietnam. Saigon was the capital of the Republic of Vietnam. On July 2, 1976 after the fall of Saigon, the city merged with surrounding Gia Định Province and was renamed Ho Chi Minh City after revolutionary leader Hồ Chí Minh.
