Ernie Pyle Monument dedicated to Ernie Pyle on Ie Shima
At the center is U.S. Army Brigadier General Edwin R. Randle, assistant commander of the 77th Infantry Division who unveiled the memorial. The brass plaque reads: "At this spot the 77th Infantry Division lost a buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945". On April 18, 1945 correspondent Ernie Pyle was killed by Japanese machine gun fire on Ie Shima.
