Eleanor Roosevelt
First Lady of the United States 1933–1945
Background
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born October 11, 1884 to parents Elliot Roosevelt and Anna Hall. During her lifetime she went by her middle name. Her first cousin was Archibald B. Roosevelt son of Theodore Roosevelt.

She was educated at a private school in England. In 1902 she returned to the United States and was presented at a debutante ball at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and soon afterwards renewed her acquaintance with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and were engaged in 1903. In 1905, she married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the couple had six children with five surviving to adulthood. She received international notoriety as the longest-serving First Lady between 1933 to 1945. Also known as simply Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt or simply Eleanor.

Prewar
On April 4, 1936 sponsored USS Yorktown CV-5 at Newport News, Virginia.

Wartime History
During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt was active in the war effort.

On August 27, 1942 she was in attendance at the launch of USS Iowa (BB-61) at New York Naval Yard in Brooklyn, New York.

On January 21 1943 sponsored USS Yorktown CV-10 at Newport News, Virginia.

South Pacific Tour
On August 17, 1943 Eleanor Roosevelt departs on her South Pacific Tour, the first time a First Lady traveled solo outside the United States. On August 23, 1943 she arrives Tutuila Island in American Samoa. On August 24, 1943 arrives Nadi Airfield and tours Viti Levu Island then departs the next day. During September 1943 she visits Guadalcanal and was photographed with A6M3 Zero Tail T2-175 and toured the American Cemetery Guadalcanal.

Memorials
Eleanor passed away on November 7, 1962 at age 78 in Manhattan, NYC. She is buried at the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, NY next to her husband Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
