Marjorie "Marge" Ann Vattendahl yearbook portrait for Superior State Teachers College
During December 1943, at the Superior State Teachers College homecoming dance Marge met Richard I. Bong who asked her out on a date. While the couple were dating, she gave Bong a a wallet sized print of her yearbook portrait that he took with him to New Guinea. In the middle of March 1944, Bong wanted her portrait painted on the nose of his plane but instead the photograph was enlarged and adhered to the nose of P-38J "Marge" 42-103993 and became one of the most famous and recognizable American aircraft of World War II.
