Enlargement of Acting Wing Commander Trevor O. Freeman in uniform
IWM Caption: "This officer has completed further sorties, including attacks on Essen, Lubeck, the Ruhr and Rostock. One night in May 1942, he led his squadron on a attack against the aircraft factory at Warenemunde. Despite large concentrations of light anti-aircraft fire and searchlights he made six bombing attacks from a very low altitude in order to ensure accuracy of bombing. He succeeded in obtaining a photograph of the results. His aircraft was hit and damaged by the enemy's ground fire and on the return journey one engine failed whilst 100 miles from his base. By sheer determination and good airmanship Wing Commander Freeman succeeded in flying safely to base. On another recent occasion he made attacks on Essen from a very low altitude against intensive opposition making at least three separate runs on to the target area, and obtained photographs of the target. Throughout his operational career this officer has proved himself to be a courageous and outstanding leader who has inspired his squadron."
