Background
George Catlett Marshall Jr. was born December 31, 1880 to parents George Catlett Marshall Sr. and Laura Elizabeth Stuart “Emily” Bradford Marshall in Fayette County, Pennsylvania as the youngest of three children.

Wartime History
During World War II, served as chief of staff and oversaw the largest military expansion in U.S. history. He oversaw the expansion of the U.S. Army from 189,000 to 227,000 plus 227,000 reservist in the National Guard.

Postwar
In early 1947, appointed Secretary of State by U.S. President Harry S. Truman.

Memorials
Marshall died on October 16, 1959 at age 78. Four days later, he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery at section 7, grave 8198.
