U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Sig 1c Douglas A. Munro in uniform
On September 27, 1942 Killed In Action (KIA) manning a .30 caliber machine gun to cover the withdrawal of U.S. Marines from the beach west of Point Cruz on Gaudalcanal. He earned the Medal of Honor, posthumously. This photograph was published in "Medal of Honor, 1861-1945, The Navy" page 229. Munro is the only member of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to earn the Medal of Honor.
