William "Willie" Devis with U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Robert B. Sofge, Jr., deputy commander on Guadalcanal for the 77th anniversary of Guadalcanal commemorations
During 2017, young Devis found a pair of dog tags and the remains of Pfc Dale W. Ross Missing In Action (MIA) January 14, 1943 west of Hill 27 on Guadalcanal. Afterwards, he reported the find to his father and the community contacted the family, who met him during August 2017 to accept the dog tags and remains then turned them over to a team from Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
