Sgt Leonard G. Siffleet blindfolded and bound moments before being executed by Japanese Navy Lt. Yasuno Chikao on the beach at Aitape
This photograph was taken of moments before the execution with Chikao holding his sword with both hands over Siffleet's moments before he was decapitated. Gathered behind is a large group of Japanese and locals watching. During late April 1944, a copy of this photograph was captured by U.S. Army and later published in newspapers including LIFE Magazine as evidence of Japanese atrocities.
