John Smith Thach was born April 19, 1905 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.

Wartime History
He attended the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) class of 1927 and graduated as a midshipmen in the U.S. Navy (USN) and spent two years serving aboard battleships. In the early 1930s, trained as a Naval aviator.

Memorials
Thach passed away on April 15, 1981 at age 75 in Coronado, California at age 75. He is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Section A-H, Site 28-A.
