Yasukuni Jinja (Yasukuni Shrine)

in Ichigaya, Tokyo near
the Imperial Palace
Yasukuni Jinja (Yasukuni Shrine) was originally known as the Tokyo Shokonsha, was
founded by Imperial command, in June 2, 1869 for the worship
of "the divine spirits of those who sacrificed themselves for
their country". During the Sino Japanese War, Second Sino Japanese War and Pacific War (December 1941-September 1945), the remains of Japanese war dead in the form of cremated ashes were interned here, and
kamikaze pilots would tell each other to "meet at Yasukuni" after
they died in combat.
Yūshūkan 遊就館 (Yasukuni Museum)
Located next to the shrine is a war and military museum
