This Lone Star Museum was founded and director of Robert L. Waltrip. In 1984 he purchased a B-25 Mitchell and began collecting and restoring World War II aircraft. In 1987 founded the Lone Star Flight Museum to make his aircraft collection open to the public in the Waltrip and Heritage Hangars. The museum also includes the Texas Aviation Heritage Gallery, Flight Academy and temporary exhibit space.
The collection includes B-17 Flying Fortress, T-6 Texan, B-25 Mitchell, PT-17 Stearman, PT-17 Cornell, T-41 Mescalero, F4U Corsair, P-47, DC-3, A-1D Skyraider, TAH-1P Cobra, MiG-17F Fresco-C, D-17S Staggerwing, Beechcraft Baron B-58, L-4H Grasshopper, OY-1 Sentinel, MiG-15, F6F-3 Hellcat, SBD Dauntless, T-33A Shooting Star, S-76A++, TBM-3E Avenger and J-3 Cub.
