Beyond Death and Dishonour One Japanese at war in New Zealand This book is the account of the capture of the author, an officer of the Akatsuki, a destroyer sunk offshore from Guadacanal in August 1942. He was transfered via the New Hebrides and New Caledonia to New Zealand, where he was held in the Featherston POW Camp until the end of the war. He returned to Japan in 1946. Along the way he describes the infamous riot at Featherston where 48 Japanese and one New Zealander died. The author became a Christian during his incarceration. This book is unique insofar as it is the only english translation of a Japanese POW and his experiences in captivity during the second world war. A good read; a companion to Mike Nicolaidi's "The Featherston Chronicles". Review by John Douglas Return to Book Reviews | Add a review or submit for review Last Updated |
