Ship History Built by Kure Naval Arsenal in Kure. Laid down April 28, 1927 as Takao-class cruiser. Launched June 16, 1930 as Atago named for Mount Atago (Mt. Atago). Commissioned March 30, 1932 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). PARTIAL LIST Sinking History On October 23, 1944 at dawn The Battle of the Palawan Passage begins when submarines USS Darter (SS-227) and USS Dace (SS-247) initiated attacks against Force A "Center Force" in the Palawan Passage at the start of the Battle for Leyte Gulf. At 5:33 Darter fires a spread of torpedoed and four hit Atago, cause fires and in only eighteen minutes capsized and sinks at roughly at Lat 9°28′N Long 117°17′E with 360 of the crew lost. Rescue After sinking, 529 of the crew including Vice Admiral Kurita were rescued including 347 rescued by the destroyer Kishinami; 171 rescued by the destroyer Asashimo.
